Tigers stave off Hugoton rally in 5-point win

January 31, 2015

GUYMON — The Hugoton Eagles almost completed an improbable comeback at Guymon Friday night. Down 19 entering the fourth quarter, the Eagles rallied to within three points three times in the final 2:23 of the game.
But two free throws by Mason LeGrange and two by Derek Portillo with 14 seconds left kept the Eagles at arm’s-length and propelled the Tigers to a 63-58 win. Portillo was 4-for-4 from the line in the final minute.

“I’d be willing to say those free throws won us the ballgame,” Guymon coach Troy Cox said. “I really feel lucky to get out of there with that one, to be honest.”

GUYMON — For about eight minutes, Friday night, the Guymon High School Lady Tigers payed toe-to-toe with the No. 3 4A team in Kansas.
But Hugoton’s press wore down the Lady Tigers in a 66-30 win over Guymon at Guymon High School.

“They’re very good, they’re fast, they can shoot it well, they play together,” Guymon head coach Tyler Chapman said. “That’s why they are number three in the state of Kansas in Class 4A.”

GUYMON — Senior Hannah Watson nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the opening moments of Tuesday night’s Guymon Lady Tigers battle with visiting Elkhart, Kan., setting the tone for what would become an easy Lady Tigers win, 65-30. With the win, Guymon improves to 11-5 on the season.
Not a bad rebound from Saturday’s loss to No. 1 (2A) Alva in the championship of the North Country Tournament.
“Defense definitely created our offense,” Guymon head coach Tyler Chapman said. “I thought we handled their pressure well, early, and got us some easy buckets.
