The Y offering class to help arthritis sufferers

September 18, 2012

The Texas County YMCA is encouraging arthritis sufferers to join them in a class that will help inform and instruct low-impact exercises.
The exercises are for anyone with arthritis or related rheumatic diseases ranging from people who are older, sedentary, and very limited by impaired joint mobility to those who are relatively active with only mild joint involvement.
Many program goals are included for the participation in these classes. Goals are to provide participants with an enjoyable and safe exercise program, encourage positive social interaction among participants, decrease depression and improve mood, maintain or improve certain physical parameters, to improve performance of daily activities, increase participants’ awareness of arthritis exercise principles, joint protection principles and relaxation techniques, to provide participants with methods for incorporating these self-care skills into the home environment, increase participants’ self-efficacy, reduce pain and stiffness, restore or maintain joint range of motions, maintain or increase muscle strength, improve balance and coordination, decrease fatigue and increase endurance, and to improve overall perceived health status.
Classes will be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Sept. 18, 21, and 25 at the YMCA, 1602 N Oklahoma, Guymon. For details and to sign up, call 338-7300 or 468-9622.
