Texhoma hires Yates as interim school superintendent

October 23, 2012

TEXHOMA — The Texhoma School Board Monday night hired Mel Yates as interim Superintendent following the resignation of Eric Smith last week.
Yates is a familiar name to the area, serving as Superintendent for many years in Texhoma on both the Oklahoma and Texas sides, as well as a 5-year stint in Guymon. He retired in 2009 as Superintendent for the Texhoma Independent School District on the Texas side.
“It’s just until we get a permanent one found.” Texhoma School Board member John Nye said. “They don’t grow on trees.”
“It’s going to take awhile,” Yates said. “Right now, they all have jobs.”
Smith had been Superintendent for more than five years before resigning last week.
The decision to hire Yates came after about a 75-minute executive session.
