The Lady Devils advance to Regionals in Mooreland Thursday after beating out Hooker and Boise City in Districts on their own field one week ago.
Texhoma is the only one of the three teams that is moving on to the regional tournament.
The Lady Devils first play Mooreland at noon in the eight-team, two day tournament.
The Red Devils’ pitcher, Bailey Talbert, and catcher, Tristen Green, sustained injuries while playing at Guymon on Nov. 11. Talbert pitched the distance in all four games at Districts and is expected to pitch in the regional tournament. Green practiced Tuesday and is now expected to play at Mooreland, but not in her usual position of catcher.
Texhoma softball head coach Greg Higgins explained that he has made a decision to move Green to shortstop. The usual shortstop, Tabra Elliott, will move over to third base while third baseman Taysi Peterson moves behind the plate.
Higgins said last Friday that Talbert was a big part of the Lady Devils’ success at Districts.
“The biggest difference is Bailey came back and pitched in the district tournament. Pitching is a big part of it and hitting,” Higgins said.
Last year, Texhoma finished the season 8-14, losing to Hooker in Districts.
The Lady Devils enter the 2012 regional tournament 19-9.
Mooreland is 24-6 overall this year and ranked No. 9 by OK Rankings. Texhoma is not ranked..
“We’re out here practicing. We’re trying to make ourselves better,” Higgins said.
“Mooreland is a good quality team, but they’re beatable,” Higgins said.
Texhoma plays Mooreland at noon and Binger-Oney plays Beaver at 2 p.m. The winners play each other at 6 p.m. The losers play each other Friday at noon.
Thursday’s winners play Friday at 2 p.m. A seventh game will be played at 4 p.m., if necessary.
