She always has a smile and a quiet voice of encouragement when she is doing her volunteer work. She is Phyllis Stokes, voted as Main Street Guymon’s Board Member of the Year for 2012 by the board of directors.
Two years ago with membership records in disarray, Stokes stepped up and said she would head Main Street Guymon’s Organization Committee, which at that time was inactive. She took years worth of membership records and compiled them, giving a realistic look at the group’s membership.
“This is only one part of the duties that Phyllis has taken over and does such a wonderful job at,” says Main Street Director Melyn Johnson.
Quickly Main Street had a fully functioning Organization Committee with some wonderful and dedicated volunteers, led by Stokes.
“Previously Main Street had an annual meeting,” Johnson explains, “but recently few attended. After Phyllis came on board we had our first annual banquet and meeting. It was a success. The second year was even more so, with the banquet having a Garden Party theme. This proved so successful that this year we are going to have another party, only this one on the beach.”
Being involved Phyllis does. Planning Phyllis does. Physical labor Phyllis does. Office work Phyllis does. And she does it better and more timely than most others and always with a smile and a fantastic attitude.
Personally she has contacted many former members … and new members. “She is the main reason we have been successful with our membership drive,” says one board member. She asks for help and is appreciative of those who do help, but she really does the brunt of the work herself. She does everything that she asks of her committee members.”
Phyllis is an employee of the Guymon Home Health organization, who became active members soon after Stokes became involved.
When a board member moved away, Stokes came on board to help there, too. Volunteer and committee chairman is more where Phyllis feels comfortable and she looks forward to letting someone else take over the board position. “We need to draw in new people all the time,” says Phyllis.
Whether she is asked to open the doors for meetings on Saturday, man the desk for the 5K Run registration, walk the streets for the Fashion Show, find booths for another event, or decorate and clean-up, she is there. Always with her smile.
With the dedication and commitment Phyllis has shown to Main Street, taking over some very daunting tasks, the Main Street Guymon Board of Directors is pleased to honor her as Guymon’s Board Member of the Year.
