Mistakes on the field kept the Tigers at bay as Guymon lost a game that was thought to be winnable Friday night.
In the next to the last game of the season played at home, the El Reno Indians (3-5 going into the Friday’s game) shut out the Tigers 47-0 in a game where several scoring drives had the Tigers threatening inside the 20-yard-line. Each time, the ball ended up turned over on downs.
Guymon lost the ball on downs while on El Reno’s 5-yard-line in the fourth quarter.
El Reno’s Justin Brown scored four of the Indians’ seven touchdowns, one on a 100-yard run from his own goal line. Hunter Freeman, Cal Baker and Murdoch Marcum each recorded one touchdown.
While El Reno scored 33 first-half points, Tiger defense held them to 14 points in the second half.
Guymon head coach Bryan Ballard was not pleased with the Tigers’ performance.
“We played the way we practiced. We practiced Tuesday and Wednesday and that’s how we played,” he said.
“It’s been the story of our year, woulda, coulda, shoulda, We are our worst enemy. We shoot ourselves in the foot,” Ballard said, referring to missed scoring opportunities.
Guymon, now 0-9, have one remaining game next Friday. The Tigers will host another 0-9 team, Western Heights. That game will be senior night where senior member of the team are honored.
Western Heights lost to El Reno 42-9 last week.
The Tigers were trying to improve on a 1-9 2011 season but tougher District 5A competition that Guymon has had to face this year has taken a toll with several losses by more than 60 points. Guymon was forced to move from 4A to 5A due to increased enrollments.
