HOOKER—It appeared that the Bulldogs were going to skin the ‘Skins Thursday night until Hooker gave up two touchdowns in the final four minutes of play dashing the shutout.
It was still ugly for the Liberal junior varsity and a stellar offensive and defensive game for Hooker.
The Bulldogs’ offensive attack included 290 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Taylor McBee recorded four, Joe Bean scored two and freshman Dayton Metcalf scored one. Hooker only gained 71 yards passing.
The final damage for Liberal was 46-14.
The Redskins received the opening kickoff, ran out of downs and returned the ball with a punt. The Bulldogs took possession on their own 8-yard-line. Being back 92 yards didn’t stop Joe Bean. The Hooker quarterback ran the ball on a keeper every one of the 92 yards, zigging and zagging his way around Liberal’s defensive team all the way into the end zone. A good kick and it was 7-0 with 8:52 remaining on the clock. Taylor McBee added six more points on a 28-yard run with :02 left to play in the first quarter. Another kick was good. Going into the second stanza up 14-0, McBee added another touchdown late in the half. A kick was blocked leaving the tally at 20-0.
In the second half, McBee scored yet a third time with less than a minute elapsed in the third quarter. Another good kick and the Bulldogs had Liberal looking at a possible shutout, trailing 27-0. McBee scored again in the third quarter on a hand-off from Bean in a goal to go situation. This time the kick was blocked — 33-0. Then Bean scored a sixth touchdown on a 55-yard run. The kick was good. The score was 40-0. Metcalf scored the final Hooker touchdown in the fourth quarter. The kick was not good. A field goal attempt by the Bulldogs failed.
It appeared that Hooker was going to shut out the Redskins 46-0 until Liberal scored once with 3:41 remaining in the game and again with :20 on the clock.
“The last few minutes, we just let the younger guys get in there,” said Hooker head coach Jacob Kreamer.
“I feel like we had to kick a little dust off in the first half. We came out in the second half and played better. I felt they came out in the second half and played a lot more intensely,” he said, acknowledging that there were a few mishaps and everything wasn’t done well.
“Defensively, we played quite well,” Kreamer said.
“I just feel like it was good for us to see a game situation,” he said and added that the recent scrimmages were good experiences but they were not real games.
