A Firehawk helicopter firefighting crew from Leesburg, Florida is currently staged at Guymon Municipal Airport at the call of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forestry Department. The crew stands ready in case of a wildfire. On Saturday, March 3, a large portion of the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles were placed under elevated to critical fire weather conditions, with the greatest fire threat to come on Sunday, March 4. Governor Mary Fallin has issued a governor's burn ban for Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Harper, Woods, Woodward, Ellis, Dewey, Roger Mills, Custer, Beckham, Washita, Greer, Kiowa, Harmon and Jackson Counties. The ban includes a ban on outdoor campfires and bonfires. LPG and natural gas grills and charcoal fired cooking outside in a grilling receptacle are permitted provided that the activity is conducted over a non-flammable surface at least five feet from flammable vegetation. Any fire resulting from grilling or the use of one of these cookers or stoves is still an illegal fire.
