The generosity of people from the Panhandle, never failing to help when one of our own is in need, has become a distinguishing trade we can all be proud of.
Guymon native, Ashley Heddins Layton, was diagnosed in April 2011 with Hodgkins Lymphoma. After two rounds of unsuccessful chemotherapy treatment in Amarillo, the second required impatient care, due to side effects of the aggressive medicine.
Ashley’s mother, Connie Lax said. “Once again, that treatment was unsuccessful and the cancer is growing and spreading.”
To help ease the burden on Layton’s rising bills and travel expenses and ensure Ashley continues to receive the treatment she desperately needs, a benefit dance has came together by Mary Kay Kuykendall and will be held on Sat., Jan. 21 at the Guymon Elks Lodge, located at 6000 Sunset Lane, from 8 p.m.-1 a.m.
The event will feature music for the dance, performed by Ken Stonecipher and the Wooden Nickel Band, door prizes and a live action. Food will also be available for guests to enjoy, which is included in the entry fee of $10 per person.
According to Lax, Ashley is now undergoing treatment at the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas, has made two separate trips there, this week alone. The 27 year old Ashley and husband Randy, who is also from the Guymon area, share two small children, Gracie-6 and Reece, almost 2.
“As you can imagine, the expenses fro the travel are costly,” Lax said. “Ashley has no insurance and is not eligible for state assistance.”
Lax made her plea to the community to help her daughter, saying, “Ashley is often described as a giver and always with a smile on her face. Now it is time to give back to Ashley.”
“This is how we can give back,” Kuykendall said. “Please come out and help this young mom fight the battle because no one fights alone!”
