HOOKER—The Bulldogs bit first about midway through the first quarter Thursday night, the Bearcats answered in the second frame, and the Bulldogs pulled ahead and maintained a lead with an 18-point finish.
All said and done, Hooker handled Mooreland 38-20.
Coming off a win over Beaver last Friday, the Bulldogs improved their season overall tally to 5-3 with the win.
Undefeated until a loss at Texhoma about three weeks ago, the Bearcats have now dropped three games.
Postseason playoffs are ahead in November, but Hooker’s head coach Jake Kreamer said his hopes for a home playoff game now appear unlikely. That was a goal he set before the season. The Bulldogs got off to a good start in August and then dropped three games.
“It (win over Mooreland) brings us one step closer to the playoffs,” Kreamer said.
“Just trying to get in, that’s what’s important to us,” he said.
Quarterback Joe Bean scored first Thursday night on a 55-yard keeper with 6:32 remaining on the first quarter clock.
Mooreland’s Keiton Crawford answered with a second quarter touchdown.
Then Hooker’s Taylor McBee put the Bulldogs up by a score three clock minutes later with a run after a handoff from Bean.
Crawford scored again for Mooreland late in the half and kicked one of very few successful conversions in the game, putting the Bearcats up 13-12.
Bean scored on a keeper and also scored a 2-point conversion, making the halftime score 20-13 in Hooker’s favor.
The second half opened with McBee running 62 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter.
Then Mooreland’s Tanner Brawner scored a touchdown, narrowing the Bulldogs’ lead to 26-20. That was all the Bearcats were going to get.
Bean scored on another keeper with just 18 second left in the third quarter.
He ran in yet another score late in the fourth quarter.
“We played a good game. Offensively and defensively we played al four quarters,” Kreamer said.
“They all played good. They played with a lot of intensity, a lot of heart,” he said.
