Area football teams open district play Friday night, and some teams are in desperate need of a win, while one — Texhoma opens district play on a roll.
No. 4. Texhoma (2-0) @ Beaver (0-3)
After an open date in Week 1 three weeks ago, the Texhoma Red Devils have been on fire. Texhoma opened the season Sept. 7 with a 49-12 win over Gruver before dominating White Deer, Texas on the road, 63-0 last week.
Bryson Beattie led the Devils’ attack with four touchdowns. He recorded two rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown. Beattie had five carries for 167 yards. Quarterback Jack Powers rushed for a touchdown and threw for a touchdown. Powers had two carries for 35 yards as Texhoma racked up 455 yards of total offense.
The Dusters are having issues this season, opening with losses to Stanton County, Kan. (46-0), Claude, Texas (26-14) and Hollis (35-6).
Guymon (0-3) @ No. 1 Guthrie (3-0)
The Tigers play their first-ever District 5A-2 game Friday and drew the short straw — top-ranked defending state champion Guthrie, on the road. Guymon has allowed an average of 69 points in three games, while Guthrie is averaging 43 points per game in wins over Duncan, Class 6A Ponca City and Class 6A Enid.
Guymon showed some speed in its ground game behind Clay Brooks, who scored Guymon’s only touchdown in last week’s 57-7 loss at Hugoton, Kan. Sophomore quarterback Jacob Test likes to throw to Alex Zakrezewicz. Other bright spots included Austin Stonecipher, Asaac Grove and Adrian Saenz.
Turpin (0-3) @ Hooker (2-1)
The Bulldogs open A-1 play against the reeling Cardinals for Homecoming. Hooker is coming off a 46-27 win over Amarillo San Jacinto where Joe Bean led the charge, followed by Taylor McBee with two touchdowns and Anselmo Estrada with one.
Turpin has scored once in three games and has been shutout the last two weeks, 55-0 to Booker, Texas and 52-0 to Shamrock, Texas.
In other action: Goodwell (0-3) opens C-1 play against Boise City (0-3). The Eagles lost starting quarterback Adam Fick in last week’s 52-6 loss at Rolla, Kan., and Austin Morris broke a collarbone and is out for about eight weeks.
Tyrone (2-1) visits No. 3 Forgan (3-0) looking to get back on the winning track after last week’s 54-8 loss to No. 5 Sharon-Mutual in their C-1 opener.
Forgan has already played two district games — both wins over ranked opponents — 32-6 over Sharon-Mutual and 56-12 over then-No. 3 Shattuck.
