GOODWELL—A strategic change didn’t seem to help as the Eagles dropped their second game Saturday night while the Bobcats improved to 2-0.
Tyrone emerged from Game 2 of this season, yet to play a fourth quarter. In both games, Oklahoma’s 45-point mercy rule spared Tyrone’s opponents the fourth quarter.
Goodwell head coach Jason Pierson attempted a strategic change, experimenting with position changes following a scoreless season opening 28-0 loss to Satanta, Kan., on Aug. 30. Pierson moved fullback Adam Fick to quarterback and Frank Stump from quarterback to offensive guard.
Both players seemed to perform well at their new positions.
The Eagles, however, did not put any points on the board in Game 2. After an eight-point first quarter for Tyrone, the Bobcats tallied 22 more points in the second frame.
Tyrone scored six touchdowns. Payson Slater recorded four and Austin Olivas scored two.
A run of about 60 yards by Olivas and a 2-point conversion on a keeper by quarterback Wall counted the 8-point first quarter. A pass play from Wall to Slater gave Tyrone the first second quarter touchdown. A 2-point conversion failed and it was 14-0. Another Wall pass to Slater and a keeper by Slater made the tally 22-0 with 4:24 on the clock. Once again, a pass from Wall to Slater and two points after gave the Bobcats a comfortable 30-0 halftime lead.
The second half opened with a lost opportunity for Goodwell. The Eagles kicked off and recovered the ball on a fumble on the kickoff return deep inside Tyrone territory. Goodwell lost the ball on downs with Tyrone recovering it on a fourth and five situation on their own 15-yard-line. A long pass to Olivas for an apparent touchdown was called back on a penalty to the 35-yard-line. Tyrone went on to score on a 28-yard passing play from Wall to Slater. A 2-point conversion made the score 38-0 and put the Eagles in serious jeopardy of losing the game on the game on the 45-point rule. The final blow came with 2:27 remaining on the third-quarter clock when Olivas scored another touchdown bringing the total to 44-0. One point shy of an early win on the 45-point rule, Tyrone added two on a keeper by Wall.
Despite the big win, Tyrone head coach Josh Bell said everything seemed a little pit off during the nearly three quarters of play.
“We had to put it up in the air more,” he said.
Bell said Wednesday that going into the game with the Eagles, he knew that Goodwell is an improved team and that the Bobcats would have play well.
“I think our kids played hard on defense. We just had a couple of letdowns,” Pierson said.
He credited Tyrone for playing well.
“Tyrone has a solid bunch of kids,” Pierson said. He mentioned the Bobcats’ Payson Slater and Austin Olivas. “Josh Bell does a great job.”
The Bobcats defeated Rolla, Kan., 69-24 for the season opener on Aug. 31. That game also ended because of the 45-point mercy rule shortly before the end of the third quarter.
Tyrone will host the Sharon-Mutual Trojans for Game 3 Friday night. Bell said he expects that to be the toughest challenge yet this season for the Bobcats.
Goodwell, now 0-2, will play at Rolla Friday night.
