Texhoma girls, Hooker boys to play for championships tonight

TEXHOMA — The Texhoma girls and Hooker boys advanced to tonight’s championships of the 37th Annual Texhoma Invitational courtesy of a couple big wins in Saturday night’s semifinals. The Lady Devils jumped to a big lead on Hooker and coasted to a 51-39 win, while the Hooker boys opened with a 19-8 first quarter lead on 14th-ranked and heavily-favored Texhoma and won 66-50.

TEXHOMA — The Texhoma and Hooker boys and girls all grabbed big wins in the first round of the 37th Annual Texhoma Invitational Tournament Friday, setting up a pair of semifinal games between the two rivals Saturday night.

The tournament was delayed a day because of snow in Texhoma creating hazardous travel conditions for out-of-town teams.

Panhandle teams continue to be ranked

The latest round of OSSAA high school basketball rankings don’t show much change in terms of Panhandle teams.

The only ranked Texas County boys team is Texhoma, which remains No. 14 in Class A with a 12-3 record. The Red Devils went 1-1 this week, falling to Beaver on the road Friday night, and rallying to beat Tyrone on the road Tuesday night.

In Class B boys, Forgan remains No. 3 at 12-3 and Felt is No. 15 at 16-2.
Fans will get a chance to see Texhoma and Felt at the Texhoma tournament, which was rescheduled for Friday, Saturday and Monday due to snow.

Guymon boys rally past Clayton

GUYMON — Angel Vega sparked a second half rally to give the Guymon Tigers a 54-48 win over Clayton, N.M. on Friday night. Vega scored 13 of his team-high 17 in the second half as Guymon turned a halftime deficit into their sixth win in seven games.

The Tigers had seven turnovers in the first quarter which gave Clayton an 11-8 lead at the end of the period and 22-16 lead at one point before the Tigers cut it to a 3-point game on a Kassius Urquiza trey right before the half.

Lady Tigers rip Clayton by 22

GUYMON — The Clayton Lady Jackets came into Friday night’s game at Guymon High School with a similar record (8-5) to the Lady Tigers, and a couple of long-range specialists. And in the opening moments of Friday’s contest, the Lady Jackets came as advertised.

Clayton opened with an 8-0 run, draining a pair of threes in the process.
Then Guymon went on a 13-0 run, and ended the first quarter on a 15-2 surge, and never looked back in a 54-32 win.

Texhoma sweeps Hooker

TEXHOMA — The Texhoma Red Devils and Lady Devils played host to Hooker on Tuesday night, coming away with a pair of wins over their intra-county rivals. The Lady Devils rallied from a 21-15 halftime deficit to post a 41-35 win, and the 14th-ranked Texhoma boys got off to a slow start and held off a Hooker rally in the fourth to win going away, 51-41.

ENID — The Chisholm Longhorns gave the Guymon boys a good game Friday afternoon at the Wheat Capital Tournament.
For about eight minutes.

After that, it was all Guymon as the Tigers improved to 6-4 with a 54-41 win. Guymon played Fairview today for the tournament consolation trophy.

Angel Vega was Guymon’s leading scorer for the second straight game as the senior scored eight points in the first quarter alone. The game was evenly-matched in the first and ended in a 13-all tie.

Lady Dogs fall to Sayre in OT; Bulldog boys win at Arapaho

ARAPAHO — Naomi Rodriguez nailed a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime against Sayre in the opening round of the Western Equipment Classic, but the Lady Dogs were unable to overcome Sayre’s 1-3-1 defense in the extra period, falling to the Lady Eagles, 41-34, Thursday afternoon.

Hooker (4-6) never led as Sayre (6-4) used a strong defense to keep the scoring low in the first half.

Alva holds off Guymon at Wheat Capital; Lady Tigers lose big

ENID — The Guymon Tiger boys led undefeated and 8th-ranked (2A) Alva for two-and-a-half quarters Thursday night in the first round of the Wheat Capital Tournament. But foul trouble and key turnovers hurt the Tigers in a 51-45 loss to the Gold Bugs at Chisholm High School.

Guymon was seeded seventh coming into the tournament and Alva second, but it was the Tigers who played like the higher seed in the first half.

Tigers sweep Hooker in varsity double-header

January 7, 2015

HOOKER — Sydney Hein led all scorers with 23 points as the 16th-ranked Guymon Lady Tigers came back from the holiday break in impressive fashion, taking care of the Hooker Lady Bulldogs 61-46 in The Dog House at Hooker High School.

The Lady Tigers (6-2) led 32-8 after the first quarter.

“We needed that first quarter,” Guymon head coach Tyler Chapman said. “We worked hard during the break, I’m very proud.”
