Texhoma takes care of Turpin

TEXHOMA — Both the Texhoma High School Red Devils and Lady Devils were unstoppable on their home floor, Tuesday night.

The Lady Devils (5-3) scored the first nine points against the Visiting Turpin Lady Cardinals, en route to a 60-34 win. The 19th-ranked Red Devil boys (6-1) started off slow in the first quarter, but dominated the rest of the way in a 69-31 win.

Guymon girls, boys take third in tournament

HUGOTON, Kan. — Sydney Hein was back in form on Saturday afternoon, leading Guymon with 18 points off five 3-pointers as the Lady Tigers downed Hooker 63-50 to place third in the annual Blue & Red Classic.

“The girls played well from start to finish,” Guymon coach Tyler Chapman said. “We played well in the press that gave us some transition baskets.”

Two other Lady Tigers scored in double figures as Jahaira Marquez scored 12 and Brooke Arledge added 11.

The win was a strong answer to Friday’s dismal performance in a loss to Gruver, Texas.

Texhoma boys third, girls fourth at Laverne

LAVERNE — The Texhoma Red Devils placed third and the Lady Devils fourth at the Laverne tournament on Saturday.

The Texhoma boys rebounded from its first loss of the season Friday night to Seiling, with a 61-57 win over Laverne to take third place.

Texhoma (5-1) led 19-17 after the first quarter, but fell behind by halftime as Laverne outscored the Red Devils 18-11 and led 35-30 at halftime.

Texhoma rolls in Laverne Tournament; Hooker girls win, boys fall in Hugoton

HUGOTON, Kan. — Three players scored in double figures as the Hooker Lady Dogs improved to 4-2 with a 53-43 win over Lakin, Kan on Friday night at the Blue & Red Classic.

Hooker led a slow first quarter just 9-4, and was up 23-20 at halftime. The Lady Dogs pulled away in the third quarter and held off a Lakin rally to win going away.

Kyra Cathcart led all scorers with 19 points, Taelor Parker added 16 and Naomi Rodriguez 10. Jordan Pritchard added 5 for Hooker, Aimee McFarland 2, and Ryanne Huskamp 1.

Tigers open Blue & Red with win

HUGOTON, Kan. — Derek Portillo scored 16 and Carter Nash 15 to lead Guymon to a 62-53 win over Southwestern Heights in the opener of the Blue & Red Classic.

Guymon jumped to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter, but Heights slowly fought back, culminating with a 16-12 final frame, but it was too little too late.

Angel Vega scored 8 for Guymon, Jacob Watson 7, Hugo Hinojos and Kassius Urquiza 6 each, and Jovan Ochoa 4.

Urquiza and Watson each had two 3-pointers, while Portillo and Hinojos each drained one from beyond the arc.

With the win, Guymon improves to 2-2.

Armstrong shot lifts Guymon over Ulysses

HUGOTON, Kan. — Olivia Armstrong took a pass at the post, turned and scored with 4 seconds left to give the Guymon Lady Tigers a 54-53 win over Ulysses, Kan. in the opener of the Blue & Red Classic.

With the win, Guymon improves to 4-0.

Ulysses led 10-3 after the first period as Guymon got off to a slow start.

“We couldn’t buy a bucket early in the game,” Guymon coach Tyler Chapman said. “Ulysses was knocking down shots and we weren’t.”

Ulysses was up 29-19 at the half, but Guymon made its move in the fourth with a 22-13 run leading to Armstrong’s game-winner.

Goodwell downs Yarbrough in High Plains opener

YARBROUGH — The Yarbrough Lady Lobos got off to a fast start against Goodwell in Thursday night’s opener of the annual High Plains Tournament.

But The Lady Eagles found its shooting stroke in the second half, and three of Yarbrough’s six players fouled out in the fourth — giving Goodwell a 5-on-3 advantage late — in a 42-34 Lady Eagles win.

Yarbrough dominated the first quarter, jumping off to a 12-2 lead behind Hannah Gloden, Tania Olivas and Sydni Wiggin. Gloden and Wiggin had steals and Goodwell was cold from the field to start before finding its form late in the first.

Lady Tigers stay perfect, down Liberal

GUYMON — One of the marks of a good team is that when your leading scorer is having an off night, someone else takes her place. Guymon leading scorer Sydney Hein was a little off, and sat out the second quarter after twisting her ankle early in the game.

Enter Brooke Arledge.

The 5-foot-7 junior sank 17 points to lead all scorers and Guymon downed Liberal, Kan., 48-38 on Tuesday night.

GUYMON — It’s been two years since Guymon head coach Tyler Chapman coached a varsity basketball game. Chapman was back in the saddle again on Friday night, and got his first win as the GHS girls head coach, 50-39 over the visiting Perryton Rangerettes.

“I’ve been out two years, they say the first one’s always the hardest to get,” Chapman said. “I’m proud of these girls, they’ve been getting after it since the summer. I’ve got great leadership, I’ve got four seniors that are doing a great job.”

But it was a sophomore that led the Lady Tigers Friday night.

Texhoma hands Hooker pair of losses; Goodwell boys win big

HOOKER — Nate Knitig put in 18 to lead all scorers as the 20th-ranked Texhoma Red Devils improved to 2-0 with a 67-37 win over injury-plagued Hooker, Friday night.

Hooker — minus Dayton Metcalf who was hurt against Forgan on Tuesday — led 14-12 after the first quarter but Texhoma eased into the lead by two at the half.

The Red Devils broke it open in the second half, outscoring Hooker (2-2) 41-13 in the final 16 minutes.
