Guymon volleyball wins El Reno Tournament

The Guymon Lady Tigers volleyball team captured the championship of the El Reno Tournament on Saturday.

Details were not immediately available, but the GDH did learn that among the wins Saturday were a 2-0 sweep of Santa Fe South and a 2-1 win over Union City.

The tournament championship comes on the heels of a 5-set win over Fort Elliott (Texas) on Thursday.

Lady Tigers softball off to 3-1 district start after split with NW Classen

The Guymon Lady Tigers softball team found its winning stroke over the weekend, opening district play with a sweep over Oklahoma City Capitol Hill 23-0 and 20-1, and a split with Northwest Classen, falling 17-9 and winning 8-5.

The Lady Tigers (3-3 overall) will play at the Beaver tournament starting Friday.

New Guymon softball coach living her dream

GUYMON — When Brandi Heath walks onto the field Thursday afternoon for the Guymon varsity softball season-opener against Woodward, it’ll be a special moment for the young coach. This is her third year at Guymon, so she’s been on the Lady Tigers field too many times to count. But tomorrow will be special.

It’s her first official game as the Lady Tigers head softball coach.

Lady Tigers suffer 5-set loss in opener

GUYMON — The Guymon Lady Tigers looked good at times on Tuesday night.
But the ghost of seasons past reared its head and the Lady Tigers suffered a 5-set loss to Stinnett West Texas at Guymon High School. The 25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 24-26, 13-15 loss gives Guymon an 0-1 record heading into Thursday’s trip to Briscoe, Texas to take on Fort Elliott. Guymon travels to the El Reno Tournament on Saturday.

Taylor resigns as Guymon head football coach

Guymon High School announced Monday night that head football coach Mike Taylor has resigned from teaching and coaching, effective immediately, citing personal reasons. Offensive Coordinator John Richmond will take over as interim head coach for the 2015 season.

"He's just going to be interim for this football season," Athletic Director Tyler Chapman said Monday night. "Mr. Melton and myself will evaluate where we are (after the season) and go from there."

Liberal Bee Jays bat boy, 9, dies after hit by bat

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A 9-year-old bat boy has died after he was accidentally hit in the head with a bat during a National Baseball Congress World Series game in Kansas.

Kaiser Carlile was wearing a helmet when he was struck by a follow-through swing near the on-deck circle Saturday during a game between the Liberal Bee Jays and the San Diego Waves, The Wichita Eagle reported.
The boy was hospitalized in critical condition, but he died Sunday, according to Mike Carlile, a member of the boy’s extended family and the Bee Jays’ general manager.

Local teams set for 'Border Wars'

Several local travel baseball and softball teams are set for the annual Border Wars Shootout World Series in Dodge City, Kansas. The tournament is slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at four different parks in Dodge City, including Legends Park, Thurow Park, Cavalier Park and Dodge City High School's Demon Field.

The brackets changed after deadline for the Thursday edition, so Thursday's story contains some inconsistencies. Look for an updated story in Friday's print edition.
