Tigers roll Spartans; Texhoma rips Sayre

September 27, 2014

GUYMON — It’s been a long time coming for the Guymon Tigers. About 687 days had passed since Guymon’s varsity football team last won a game. The program had been in a tailspin.

That is, until Friday night.

Guymon got the monkey off its back in big fashion, dominating Oklahoma City Southeast 68-21 at Carl & Lou McKinnon Field. And the fact it was Homecoming didn’t hurt at all.

How does it feel to get your first win as head coach, Mike Taylor?

Tigers take on OKC Southeast for homecoming tonight

September 26, 2014

GUYMON — Coaches traditionally try to schedule what they consider “weaker” opponents for Homecoming in an effort to garner a win for their team. But for Guymon the last few years, no opponent can be considered weak.

But for Homecoming this year, the Tigers will be facing one of the “weaker” teams in District 5A-2 in the Southeast Spartans. Head coach Mike Taylor just hopes the distractions surrounding Homecoming won’t cause his team to lose focus as the Tigers try to get their first win since the final game of 2012 and Taylor’s first as a head coach.

GUYMON — For the first quarter of Friday night’s home-opener at Memorial Stadium, the Liberal Redskins were doing everything possible to hand Guymon a win.

The Guymon defense forced four turnovers on Liberal’s first four possessions, but only had one score to show for it — a 32-yard interception return by Baily Homan.

Lane Martinez recovered a fumble on the fourth play of the game and Anthony Peña recovered two before Homan’s interception.

“They’re the defending state champs, they haven’t lost a game in a long time, I don’t think they’ve had a close game in a long time,” said Hooker head coach Bill Patterson. “We gave them everything they wanted, and more.”

Valles scored one rushing touchdown and scored another off a pass from Dayton Metcalf, while Godfrey’s score came on the ground.

Guymon to battle Liberal in home-opener

September 10, 2014

GUYMON — For the Guymon Tigers, last week’s 31-22 setback at Hugoton was
not as bad as the score might seem. It was a loss, but in a way it was a win because the Tigers proved their new offensive scheme can produce points, the team has bought into it, and the players didn’t roll over and
play dead after they lost an early lead on a rainy night in Kansas.
